Agnes Sachsenroeder has lived in Cairo, Berlin, Bucharest and Sofia for over a decade. While in these cities, she also travelled extensively to other countries in the neighbourhood. Apart from grappling with the ‘culture shock’ that came from being dunked in cultures as diverse as Middle Eastern, European and Balkan, she also experienced first-hand the ‘trailing spouse shock’, as she morphed from being a lawyer to just The Wife of her husband whose job postings took them to different countries. Sachsenroeder worked as a coordinator for a newcomers´ orientation programme in Cairo, helping newcomers adjust to life in Egypt. She is also the author of CultureShock! Bulgaria. During her stint as Trailing Spouse, apart from cross-cultural work, she also taught English to German executives in a leading bank and other organisations and worked on projects for non-governmental organisations.
